Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave Therapy and Treatments
Shockwave is a relatively new therapeutic protocol, which is very effective in treating a variety of musculo-skeletal complaints, especially chronic tendinopathy complaints which have been unresponsive to other interventions such as cortisone injection. It has varying success rate of 65% to 91%, and is very successfull in reducing pain an increasing mobility. The therapy is conservative and surgery-free.

Mechanism of Action

Shockwave is an acoustic wave therapy, which delivers high energy impulses to painful myoskeletal tissues. The energy impulse promotes regeneration of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues and can often reduce pain intesity rapidly by blocking pain transmissions. The medical effects are as follows:

  • Reduction of chronic inflammation
  • Stimulation of new blood vessel formation
  • Increased collagen production
  • Release of trigger points
  • Reduction in calcium build up in tendons
  • Pain reduction by blocking substance “P”- a neurotransmitter that mediates pain

Shockwave treatments can be used for conditions such as rotator cuff tendonitis, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, plantar fasciitis, achilles tendonitis, knee pain etc.
